Interesting facts about beds
Most of us are happy to have a bedroom bed with a comfortable mattress in our home. We even take it for granted. But do we ever wonder how this piece of furniture has evolved from ancient times to today? Here are some interesting facts from the history of the bed:
*One of the first measured beds measured 5.64 meters wide and 3.66 meters long. It was beautifully carved and had a canopy. Unbelievably, as many as 68 people could fit on such a bed. Can you even imagine it?
*3400 BC, King Tutankhamun had a bed made of gold and ebony. Poor people used to sleep on palm branches in those days.
*In the days of the Roman Empire, people became even more aware of owning beds. In other words, they had luxurious beds. The Romans decorated their beds with gold, silver and bronze. Beds had mattresses that were stuffed with hay, wool or feathers.
*The Romans even had a water bed. They would lie in a cradle of warm water until they began to doze, then they would be taken out and gently placed in another cradle with a mattress.
*During the Renaissance, mattress filling was made from dried pea pods or straw. Some mattresses were made with feather filling and velvet or beautiful silk fabrics.
*During the 16th to 17th century, mattresses were usually made with straw filling. The mattress was placed on a grid (net) stretched from a rope.
*In the late 18th century, beds made of cast iron and mattresses made of cotton came into focus.
*In 1865, the first spring structure for beds was invented and patented.
